Account Executive Salary Guide 2026: What AEs Actually Earn

Google "Account Executive salary" and you get a hallucination. Glassdoor says $95K. LinkedIn Salary Insights says $125K. Levels.fyi has almost no data. Every number is old, self-reported and wildly wrong for tech AEs.
Here's the real number, sourced from 140 live Account Executive job listings on UpliftGTM as of the article date. Every figure below is the actual band published by the employer — not scraped Reddit posts, not last year's Glassdoor snapshot.
TL;DR: what AEs actually earn
Based on 140 published-salary listings for roles titled "Account Executive" (excluding Enterprise AE and Mid-Market AE, which have their own bands).
| Metric | Base + OTE Range |
|---|---|
| Median AE | $181K – $230K |
| Top quartile (75th percentile) | $340K OTE |
| Top decile (90th percentile) | $446K OTE |
The gap between median and top-decile — nearly 2× — is the most important number in this guide. Same job title. Same role description. Different company selection. Different compensation.
Why the median-to-top-decile gap is so wide
An AE at a Series A B2B tools startup selling to SMB might make $150K OTE.
An AE at Databricks, Stripe, or Ramp selling into growth-stage tech companies with $50K+ ACVs might make $400K+ OTE on the exact same title.
Same title, near-identical day-to-day, 2.5× the total comp. The variables:
- ACV (Average Contract Value): bigger deals justify bigger comp
- Sales cycle: longer, more strategic = higher pay
- Company stage: growth-stage and late-stage pay top of market; early-stage pays market or below
- Category velocity: AI-native companies (OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks) pay the top of market to attract talent
If you're an AE earning below $181K OTE, the market says you're underpaid for the median. If you're earning below $230K OTE, you have real leverage.
Base vs OTE vs commission — the anatomy of AE comp
Most AE offers break down as:
- Base salary: 45-55% of OTE (typically $85K–$130K base for AE roles)
- On-target commission: 45-55% of OTE (paid quarterly against quota attainment)
- Equity: highly variable — at growth-stage companies expect 0.05-0.15% grants; at early-stage 0.25%+ possible; at public companies stock refresh grants only
A representative AE offer today: $110K base + $110K OTE variable = $220K OTE. Add equity worth $30-80K/year at expected outcomes.
At the top decile ($400K+ OTE): $160-200K base + $200-250K variable. Companies at this comp level typically pay uncapped commission.
Regional breakdown
From our 140 listings, US roles dominate (n=112 with region tagged). Non-US AE salary data in ATS listings remains sparse — most European and APAC employers still don't publish salary.
| Region | Median AE Range | Sample |
|---|---|---|
| US | $166K – $210K | n=112 |
| Global / remote | $292K – $401K | n=4 |
The US median is slightly lower than the overall AE median in the TL;DR table because the "AE" bucket includes some higher-comp Enterprise-adjacent roles at scale-up companies that don't self-classify as Enterprise AE.
For non-US roles: UK typically pays 60-70% of US for the same title. Continental EU: 50-65%. Australia: 65-75%. Singapore/APAC hubs: 70-90%.

Where the top-decile AE jobs live
Companies where our data consistently shows AE bands above the $340K p75 mark:
- Data infrastructure: Databricks, Snowflake, MongoDB, Elastic, Datadog
- Payments + fintech: Stripe, Ramp, Adyen, Airwallex
- Modern SaaS: Notion, Airtable, Vercel, Attio, Linear
- AI-native: OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Sierra, Harvey, Cursor
If you're an AE and want top-of-market comp, applying at these companies moves you toward the p90 band by default. Company selection is the single biggest lever on your total comp.
Career math — before and after AE
The full GTM ladder around the AE role:
| Stage | Role | Median OTE | Δ vs AE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | SDR / BDR | ~$110K | –52% |
| Junior close | Mid-Market AE | ~$149K | –35% |
| Mid-career | AE | ~$230K | — |
| Senior close | Enterprise AE | ~$346K | +50% |
| Manager | Sales Manager / Director | ~$310K | +35% (with equity) |
| Executive | VP Sales / CRO | ~$500K+ | +117% |
Two career paths from AE:
- Stay IC, move up the deal-size ladder: AE → Enterprise AE → Strategic AE. Deals get bigger, compensation compounds. Median → $346K, top decile → $462K.
- Move to management: AE → Sales Manager → Director → VP Sales / CRO. Base comp climbs steadily; equity dominates at the top.
The IC path pays more early but caps in the $400-500K range. The management path caps higher (multi-million at CRO level) but takes longer and the day-to-day is entirely different.
What separates top-decile AEs
We don't have proprietary data on individual AE performance — no one does. But looking at the profile of companies that pay top-of-market, three things correlate strongly:
- Category selection: AI + data infrastructure > SaaS tools > agency/services
- Deal-size progression: top-decile AEs move up-market steadily. Start at $10K ACV → work into $50K → $200K → $1M+. Each step-change 2-3x's their earning ceiling
- Company selection over role selection: a mid-market AE at Databricks out-earns a senior AE at a Series A startup by 2x
If you're optimising a career move, don't chase the title. Chase the ACV band the company is closing, and the growth stage.
